Calling All Monsters

The Halloween season is rapidly approaching.  Every year, I compile a list of events to Hallowhelp ghosts & goblins find spooky fun.  Typically I focus my efforts on Columbus and southern Ohio but I’m always glad to add events in other areas as well.

I’m open to absolutely any type of event.  Halloween parties, haunted attractions, farm markets, community events, and even great home displays are welcome.  If you’re putting on an event or have a favorite that you attend every year, please drop me a line so I can help get the word out.

On a personal note, I’d be especially interested in hearing about any charity events for kids.  I’m usually pretty busy during 4October but will gladly try to pop in to any many of these as possible, to help spread the Halloween cheer.

What exactly is Monster For Rent?

What exactly is Monster For Rent?

He’s a stilt-walking monster, standing at just under 9’ tall.  In his younger days, he worked at various “haunted houses” and “haunted hayrides”.   Now as a more seasoned monster, he spends the Halloween season, hiring himself out to deliver balloon-a-grams, entertain at birthday parties, Halloween parties, grocery stores, farm markets, and different companies who want to draw some attention to their business during the Halloween season.

Originally from Rochester, NY, the monster spent a number of years residing in West Palm Beach, FL.  Currently, he resides in the quiet town of Athens, OH.

So what does the monster do?

Really that depends on the specific event.  The overwhelming majority of the time, he’s called into action to shake hands and pose for pictures with party-goers and customers of the various events that he’s hired to perform at.

At company functions, he’s been used to pass out advertising literature, march in parades, draw attention to certain displays within a store, or even stand by the side of the road to help draw in business.

Can the monster talk?

Sadly, no… The mad scientist who created the monster neglected to give him the ability to speak.  However, he’s become quite adept at communicating with folks through hand gestures and head bobs.

There will be lots of young children at my event.  Will the monster be too scary for them?

While it is true that a 9’ tall monster might seem pretty intimidating, the monster very rarely scares any little ones.  In his experience, children who are afraid of Santa Claus, clowns, or the Easter Bunny may also be afraid of the monster.

The monster has become quite adept at scanning the crowd for signs that any of the little folks are looking a bit uneasy.  When he detects this, he avoids eye contact and focuses on the folks who are close by, shaking his hand and posing for pictures.  Generally, this allows any timid youngsters to move along and not suffer any frights.

The monster is so big.  Will he fit in my home or business?

Aside from being just under 9’ tall, the monster is able to fit just about anywhere that an event might be held.  He’s easily as maneuverable as any “normal” person.  As such, he’s able to duck through regular doorways, climb stairs, and pretty much go anywhere required, doing what needs to be done.

There will likely be big crowds at my event.   Will this be a problem for the monster?

Not at all.  The monster is very sturdy on his feet and has full peripheral vision.  Whether he’s indoors with merchandise displays or outdoors in a throng of people, the monster is very adept at moving about in tight spaces.

Could the monster hold a sign to promote my event/business?

Yes, absolutely.  The monster would be able to hold/carry any sign that any other “normal” person could.

mfr3Any chance we could dress the monster up in one of our uniforms?

Sure.  Aside from being rather large, the monster would be happy to.  Over the years, he’s worn t-shirts, aprons, hats, & buttons from those who have used his services.

Columbus Zombie Pub Crawl 10/19/2013

On Saturday October 19th, an undead horde will converge on the Short North district for the Columbus Zombie Pub Crawl.  This motley crew will shamble from bar to bar, having a grand time in the process.  Best of all, all of this takes place a good week before most of the other Halloween type events occur.

I’ve joined this band of the walking dead for the past couple years and it’s always a good time.  Don’t know anybody else who’s going?  That’s no problem.  Just put on your “dead face” and show up.  You’ll be rubbing elbows with other zombies before you finish your first drink.  You’d be hard pressed to find a more welcoming group of dead people.

The Facebook page for the event is here and you can follow on Twitter @cbuszombiepub.

Halfoween Cleveland 2013 – Halfway to Halloween Party

Dust off the cobwebs Halloween fans!  Crawl out of your crypts, rise from your graves, and tighten your electrodes, because it’s time to party!

On Saturday, April 27th, the dead will walk the streets of downtown Cleveland.  This inaugural Halfoween event will be a 3 bar crawl in the warehouse district of downtown Cleveland. The event will be free, with drink specials for those in costume.  A costume contest will be held with sponsored prizes for a number of categories.

You only get so many chances in life to celebrate Halloween.  It’s time to suit up and get your butts out there.  More information may be found on their Facebook page.  I’ll see you there!

Zombie Pub Crawl IV 10/20/2012 Columbus, OH

The Midwest Haunters Convention, HighBall Halloween, & Columbus Zombie Walk are all huge events which get a lot of publicity.  However, this evening I’m going to share with you a lesser known event which should be right up the alley of any self-respecting Halloween, Horror, or Zombie Fan.

On Saturday October 20th, an undead horde will converge on the Short North district for the Columbus Zombie Pub Crawl IV.  This motley crew will shamble from bar to bar, having a grand time in the process.  Best of all, all of this takes place a good week before most of the other Halloween type events occur.

I joined this band of the walking dead last year and had a wonderful time.  Now, it may come as no surprise to you that I’m always on the lookout for an excuse to “get my spooky on”.  However, there were certain things about this event which made it extra nice.

First and foremost were the people. I didn’t know a soul (and don’t even live in Columbus) but I was never without someone to talk to for the whole night.  You’d be hard pressed to find a more welcoming group of dead people.

The other fun part about the evening was watching the reaction of all the “normal” people as a throng of zombies suddenly appeared in their favorite watering hole.  I wish I had a dollar for every person who I heard say “Oh, I wish I’d known about this.  I would have put on a costume”

Well, now YOU have heard about it.  If this sounds like your cup of tea, come on out and join in the fun.

Don’t know anybody else who’s going?  Like I said, that’s no problem.  Just put on your “dead face” and show up.  You’ll be rubbing elbows with other zombies before you finish your first drink.

The Facebook page for the event is here and you can follow on Twitter @cbuszombiepub.

Zombie Buffet 5K 10/13/2012 Columbus, OH

Do you have what it takes to survive a zombie apocalypse?  On October 13th, you’ll have your chance to find out, as the Zombie Buffet 5K comes to Columbus, OH.

The Zombie Buffet 5K is a unique road race that pits Runners against Zombies in a mad dash to safety.  The event narrative is a virus has broken out and the uninfected are in the midst of an orderly evacuation when something goes horribly wrong and the infected get loose in the Evacuation Zone. As a runner your only chance at survival is to run to the safe zone without becoming one of the infected. This will not be easy as you have 3.1 miles to run with dozens of zombies throughout the course as well as dozens more in hot pursuit.

I first heard about the Zombie Buffet 5K this past spring and immediately fell in love with the concept.  I liked the idea so much that I dragged my 42 year-old body out and started training.  Within a couple short months, I went from not having run any real distance since high school, to banging out 5 kilometers every other day.  Now I’m ready to test my mettle against the walking dead.

I assure you that I have no hopes of winning this event but I’m damn sure going to do my best to avoid being infected and hope to cross the finish line intact.  How could any self-respecting Halloween fan not love this?

When you register you can choose to be either a Zombie, a Runner, or register for the Infected Lottery and leave your fate to luck. The path you choose controls much of your experience in the Zombie Buffet 5K.

As a runner you have two health flags and only one goal – cross the finish line with at least one of your flags still intact. Fail to achieve that goal and lose both of your flags and you will become one of the Zombies and join in the pursuit for the remaining runners. This is how the infection spreads

As a Zombie your goal is entirely different – collect as many runner flags as possible.

Each wave of the Zombie Buffet 5K consists of a combined 400 participants and will have two winners: the first Runner to cross the finish line with at least one flag intact and the Zombie who collects the most flags. Additional prizes are awarded to the 2nd and 3rd place runners.

The Zombie Buffet 5K has something for people of all ages, with runners divided by age group as follows: 11 to 13, 14 to 16, and 17 and up.  There will be prizes for all categories.

All participants will receive a Zombie Buffet 5K tee-shirt, dog tag, bumper sticker, silicone bracelet, sponsor swag, access to the after party, and most importantly training for the actual inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Team “Monster For Rent” consists of only myself at the moment.  However, if any of you monster fans care to join in, I’d love the company.  Don’t care to run?  Come on down and be a zombie.  There are only so many chances in a year to get all ghouled up and cut loose, it would be a shame to miss out.

Any any rate, time is short.  Slots are filling up fast and the organizers are encouraging people to get their tickets now, in order to assure a spot.  For the full story, check out the event page http://www.zombiebuffet5k.com/.

Finally, if you’re already planning on attending and happen to be reading this, please leave a comment below.  With luck, we can toast our survival at the after-party.

Highball Halloween: Masquerade on High 10/27/2012 Columbus, OH

Highball Halloween returns this year to downtown Columbus.  The annual event is a massive street party along High Street.  Highball will move to Saturday this year and while I’m no expert on downtown Columbus, it sounds as if it will also be a bit further south than last year.

For 2012, a Carnivale / Mardi Gras theme is sure to bring out the colorful costumes.  Plenty of events will fill the evening.  You can expect everything from costume contests (for both amateurs and fashion designers), make-up artists, dancing, and more stilt-walkers than you can shake a stick at.  However, probably my favorite activity at Highball is people watching.  People from every age and walk of life will be there to celebrate.

A mere $5 admission gives you access to all of this from 5pm-1am.  For more information, check them out here.
